Understanding the Value of Prints

There is never a guarantee that the artworks you purchase will increase in value beyond the same price you originally paid for them. So don’t buy art with a mindset that its value will increase.  It's my belief that every painting that is purchased has something about it that personally connects with the buyer. The connection creates a distinctive reaction that is personal and unique.  The experience is often one of calmness, introspection and reflection provided by a combination of past experiences, values, beliefs, relationships and one's sense of beauty.   This applies to prints as well. It's the image captured in the original painting and duplicated in the print that creates an emotional connection and impulse to purchase.

Are art prints worth anything?

Open Ended Edition.

Open ended edition prints have no limit to the the number printed.  it’s unlikely that prints from an open edition will be worth anything beyond that first sale. They are meant to be sold in mass, appreciated by the buyer, but not resold again.

Limited Edition Prints

Limited edition prints are prints that are produced in a small quantity. This increases their value because, given they aren’t mass produced, there are only a few copies to go around. Unlike typical prints that are produced in unlimited quantities, limited edition prints can be resold depending on the fame of the artist, the limited number of prints in the edition, and given that they become more and more rare as time goes on.

An original is any one of kind or series of images the artist has approved as original artwork or copies of original artwork that the artist has approved, signed, and numbered to be reproduced a certain amount of times.  If there are multiple copies that exist of a particular painting and they aren’t identified with an edition number it is classified as wall art. They are not original.

It may be surprising that limited edition prints are generally signed in pencil.  According to Seaside Gallery in North Carolina, pencil signatures are usually the type of signature that collectors prefer. It has become a tradition for the artist to sign their name in the lower margin under the image. They may also include the edition number, title and date.  Seaside Gallery says that we can thank James McNeil Whistler for helping to introduce and promote the handwritten signature at the end of the 19th century. The hand signed signature signified the integrity of the print, that it is original and distinctive from a reproduction. Whistler charged twice as much for his hand signed pieces than he did his other pieces from the same edition.

If artworks are copied and not signed or numbered then it is considered a poster, wall art, or décor art and not original or assumed to have been copied without permission of the artist is therefore an open edition copy and has no value. Open editions are the same as posters they are reproductions or copies only without any value.

Ronald Garnier Fine Art Prints are Originals

The prints available for purchase on our website are Limited Edition Prints.  Each print purchased is accompanied with a Certificate of Authenticity confirming that the print is a copy of original artwork created by the artist and that the print is original, approved, signed, and numbered to be reproduced a limited amount of times by the artist.

Each Limited Print Edition has a limit of 100 prints per painting (considered to be a low number to increase value).  This includes the total prints on paper or canvas combined.
